Elizabeth Thatcher, a young schoolteacher from a wealthy family in a large Eastern city migrates to a small coal mining town in Western Alberta. Upon arrival in Coal Valley, Elizabeth realizes she has some challenges ahead of her.
The town is still reeling form a recent coal mining accident that claimed the lives of many of Coal Valley’s men, including the husband of Abigail Stanton, Elizabeth’s first ally. Elizabeth established herself as a friend and a problem solver as the residents of Coal Valley begin to warm up to her, including Jack just as his (ex) fiancé, Rosemary arrives in town.
Just as love is beginning to bloom between Elizabeth and Jack, Elizabeth is called back to her home in the East. The residents of Coal Valley must pull together as they endure the trial for the mining disaster. Rosemary decides she wants to play a major role in the town’s arts and entertainment and sets about making some changes.
When Elizabeth finally returns home, she, and Jack attempt to start their relationship in earnest but find out they have more obstacles to overcome. Just when they think they have worked through the problem, they receive upsetting news that may tear them apart forever.
Love continues to grow between Elizabeth and Jack as Jack prepares to take a big step toward building a future with Elizabeth. Lee pops the questions to Rosemary, and she begins planning her dream wedding.
Another budding romance begins between Abigail and Pastor Frank as they share their courtship with their neighbors. Everyone learns the truth about Pastor Frank as a gang threatens the town. Abigail experiences heartbreak as the children’s aunt comes to take them. Jack’s mother pays a surprise visit and Elizabeth struggles to see eye to eye with her.
After the death of a friend, Jack makes some difficult life choices that may affect Elizabeth as well. Elizabeth fights to clear her name and get her job back.
Jack gets some troubling news as Wyatt and the railroad continue to make problems for Hope Valley. The children have to deal with a stern new schoolteacher.
Elizabeth’s sister, Julie comes for a visit and Abigail must find a way to convince the railroad to build its depot in Hope Valley. Elizabeth and Jack begin planning their wedding and Rosemary jumps in and takes over. Bill’s life is turned upside down when AJ Foster comes to Hope Valley to turn herself in.
The residents of Hope Valley rally around one of their own when they experience a crushing loss.
Hope Valley gets its first telephone and a new resident with it. Suspicions start to spread around the handsome new saloon owner. Carson and Faith must decide if they should pursue their feeling for each other.
Bill is offered a judgeship, but debates whether he should accept it. Lucas sets up a new library for the town in hopes of winning Elizabeth’s affections.
Elizabeth, inspired by little Jack begins writing in earnest and Lucas shares some advice with her. Jesse and Clara plan their wedding.
Elizabeth struggles with the realization that both Lucas and Nathan are competing for her affections. As Jesse and Clara learn how to live together, Elizabeth and Nathan attempt to resolve their differences.
Elizabeth is conflicted about which of her suitors to choose. Lucas’ mother comes to Hope Valley which makes Elizabeth very anxious about her book. A new family arrives in Hope Valley and Elizabeth takes on a new challenge with teaching their children.
Clara and Jesse experience financial woes at the beginning of their marriage. Nathan makes his adoption of Allie final. Two members of the community find love growing between them. Carson and Faith’s love is put to the test as Elizabeth finally decides between her two suitors.
Season 9 returns with an all-star cast, including Erin Krakow (Elizabeth Thatcher Thornton), Kevin McGarry (Nathan Grant), Chris McNally (Lucas Bouchard), Jack Wagner (Bill Avery), and Amanda Wong (Mei Suo).
In Season 9, Hope Valley is in a state of growth. A foundry will come to town bringing new jobs and new towns people. One new character will offer Nathan a second chance at love after losing Elizabeth to Lucas. While some relationships between current characters will progress other will come to an end and we will have to say goodbye to beloved friends. The Mayoral race will have neighbors running against each other to lead the town. As the relationship between Elizabeth and Lucas grows stronger, Elizabeth learns some details about Lucas' past that may jeopardize their future.
